Dr. Edoardo Mariani

Chiesi Farmaceutici
Parma, Italy

Dr Mariani graduated in Organic Chemistry at the University of Genoa with a thesis on chemoenzymatic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Giuseppe Guanti and Prof. Luca Banfi; after graduating, Dr Mariani worked on polymer chemistry at Imation (SV) through an internship collaboration before moving to the UK where he obtained a PhD at the University of Leeds working in the group of Prof. Ron Grigg on multicomponent Pd-catalysed cascade reactions and on the synthesis of palladacycle catalysts. Then, Dr Mariani worked as a researcher for Chimete srl, a CRO based in Tortona (AL) and then at Newchem SpA in Verona and Industriale Chimica srl in Saronno (VA), mainly on steroid and prostaglandine synthesis for the manufacturing of generics. Dr Mariani finally joined Chiesi Farmaceutici SpA about 10 years ago as a Process Chemistry Scientist in the group led by Fausto Pivetti, for the route scouting and manufacturing of new chemical entities (NCEs) for early clinical studies and supporting activities. He is currently in charge of the Process Chemistry Unit at Chiesi, leading a group of scientists and graduate students focused on route scouting, process development and optimisation, safety and crystallisation studies as well as on the application of metrics for process efficiency and green chemistry evaluation and on new technologies (e.g. flow and photochemistry) in collaboration with the medicinal chemistry colleagues. Dr Mariani published 2 papers on Pd-catalysed reactions and 6 patents on processes for the manufacturing of APIs.
